The scrap recycling industry is becoming heavier in the steel industry value chain
A study by the German Institute for Environmental Protection, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) shows that the scrap recycling industry is becoming increasingly important in the steel industry value chain. Primary materials cannot meet the current and future needs of the German steel industry, and second-hand raw materials are indispensable for highly innovative steel products at the domestic and international levels. The annual turnover of the German steel recycling industry is billions, and the number of employees in 2015 was 37,000. The study believes that steel recycling will play an increasingly important role in the future development of circular economy. Products made from scrap steel are greener than products made from primary raw materials. Studies have shown that manufacturing 12.6 million tons of crude steel from scrap steel in Germany can reduce 17 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Scrap can be used in construction, automobiles, energy technology and aerospace without affecting quality. Therefore, the use of scrap steel not only has a positive environmental impact, it can also bring Germany a much-needed competitiveness to compete with its Asian counterparts.
